SummaryA perennial medicinal plant, Saposhnikovia divaricate Schischkin (Ledebouriella seseloides WOLFF, Umbelliferae), was propagated through somatic embryogenesis of the leaf callus. The callus tissues were induced from leaf explants placed on Linsmaier-Skoog (LS) agar medium containing 1 μM 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 1 μM. kinetin. Somatic embryos were differentiated from superficial cells of primary callus tissues maintained for more than four months without transfer to fresh medium. The somatic embryos were proliferated in liquid LS medium without growth regulators. After germination on the hormone-free LS agar medium they were transferred to half strength LS medium supplemented with 1% sucrose and allowed to grow into plantlets, which were then transplanted to pots.
